Elizabeth's case

Emily was admitted to hospital in April 2004 at the age of 60 to undergo a right total hip replacement. Four days after the operation, her prosthetic hip joint became dislocated and a further operation was required.

Two days after the second operation, Emily's right foot became mottled and she complained that the limb felt cold. Her foot pulses were not checked, either before or after the operation, and it was only around 11 days later that it was realised that there was a problem with the blood supply to her right leg. By this time it was too late to save the leg and a below-knee amputation was carried out in May 2004. Emily also suffered from severe pressure sores to her back which took a long time to heal and left permanent and painful scars.

Results of the case
Emily lived in an area where everything was accessible to her within walking distance because she enjoyed walking and did not drive. Therefore becoming wheelchair-dependant had a significant effect on her life. She was delighted that we managed to secure a settlement of £600,000 for her, with part of her claim including the cost of making wheelchair-access adaptations to a new boat to allow her to enjoy boating which was one of her long-standing hobbies.
