WHAT HAPPENS IF I DIE WITHOUT A WILL?

1. Your husband / wife / partner does not automatically inherit your house (although he / she may get it if you own it jointly - this is not automatic and you should check with your solicitor).

2. If you do not leave a will, but leave a husband / wife / partner, children or other people who are financially dependent on you at the time you die, then they may have a claim against the people who inherit.

3. Your husband / wife may be able to choose to take a lump sum, rather than to take a right to receive income during his / her lifetime.

4. If you are not domiciled in the UK (broadly, are not from the UK, or do not live here intending to remain here permanently or indefinitely) then the rules may apply in a different way to your property.

5. If the property is outside England and Wales then local law may override these rules.
